Yep.
I’ve been saying this for years. If you live Downtown the facts are alive, jarring. They jump out at you. Walking around, there is more blight than there is growth and it’s been like that for half a decade as far as I can tell. Atlanta was listed as #3 in Forbes’ list of America’s most empty cities earlier in 2009.
Wrongly, far too many consider the CITY of Atlanta’s fortunes to be directly linked to the Atlanta Metro area. It’s not. Atlanta is sequestered, Atlanta is singled out, Atlanta is set aside.
I don’t expect one penny of Metro Atlanta Regional and Georgia State tax dollars in any significant portion to directly help Atlanta (which isn’t to say that North Fulton doesn’t begrudgingly help South Fulton county. South Fulton county is much larger than the City of Atlanta, though).
Watch as North Fulton continues it’s secession movement to re-constitue Milton county. If and when that happens, this city is DONE. Real, progressive, forward thinking solutions need to be brought to bear. Atlanta needs to reinvent her self, AGAIN.
note: the below blog entry on Atlanta Creative Loafing’s blog was copied and pasted and the links therein work on THEIR blog, but not here on my tumblr for some reason
